Medstar

MedStar Health, a 10-hospital health system based in Baltimore, Maryland, wanted to expand healthcare access to the growing population of Harford County, Maryland. They called on MedCraft to partner with them in developing the new MedStar Health Bel Air Medical Campus. Since opening in April 2016, the 107,000 square foot ambulatory care center has effectively integrated highly-skilled physicians and staff into a well-planned collaborative care facility offering urgent care, primary care, women’s services, imaging, rehabilitation, orthopaedics, and comprehensive cancer services.

As with every new project, MedCraft partnered with MedStar to establish a clear set of goals for the project. These served as the guiding tenets for the overall development process. Increased market share, better coordinated care, higher levels of patient and physician satisfaction, and the opportunity to expand over time were just a few of MedStar’s objectives for the facility. Working together with MedStar Executive Leadership, we studied the needs of the community, introduced best practices from other MedCraft facilities, encouraged user groups to think differently about their future care environment, and focused on co-locating services to leverage clinical synergies and provide opportunities for future expansion. All of this resulted in what MedStar now describes as “a one-stop shop hospital without beds.”

Within six months of opening, the Bel Air Medical Campus is realizing impressive results according to MedStar leadership and the physicians and clinicians who practice in the facility. The design and flow of the building allow physicians to work more efficiently and minimize patient wait times. Community and patient feedback have been overwhelmingly positive as measured by increasing volumes and patient satisfaction results. By expanding access in a growing community and aligning services with two of MedStar hospitals in the region, the system is strengthening its market position and has a master plan in place for future growth in Harford County.
